"The essence of SEASHORE STYLE is the sea itself, stirring powerful, evocative memories of childhood. To walk across the beach to the water's edge is one of the great joys in life. As our cares and everyday concerns evaporate, we enter a new world of light and space, distance and energy - a world where the elements rule, and wind and waves create an ever changing environment."

As a kid we spent whole summers at the cottage - on sunny days there was never any shortage of things to keep us busy until supper and on rainy days Mom had a magic cupboard - or so it seemed (in retrospect it was what kept her sane when all the kids piled inside and moped there was 'nothing to do'). This cupboard held enigmatic items like a crokinole board, strange hats my grandmother brought home from 'exotic' trips - straw ones with seashells spelling out Caribbean island names, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, a Ramole game, a compass, cribbage board - all magical to us.

Well I've found a company which makes replica vintage seaside adventure toys for just such a cupboard and I fell in love with the memory. They are also so fantastic looking they'll be out in the open not in the cupboard.

Wouldn’t You Like to.
Build the Best Sand Castle on the Beach?

If your sand castles tend to look more like Roman ruins than elegant fortresses, you’re probably not using enough water, says Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga, author of Sandcastles Made Simple, who gives lessons to kids of all ages on South Padre Island, Texas. Use her topple-proof tips—no plastic molds required!

1. Find the beach’s “sweet spot” (where wet sand meets dry), and dig down until you hit water. Next to the hole, pack the discarded sand to form a hard and level base.

2. Add sand to the water in the hole to make a wet paste. Plop a double handful of it onto your base; gently flatten the mound. Continue stacking to form a tower.

3. With a plastic knife, smooth the walls, carve bricks and add windows. Use a spoon to make scalloped edges and arched doorways. And watch the tide!

LEAVE THE BEACH BEHIND

Sand feels nice between your toes when you're lounging beach side. In the bedroom, not so much. Before you get home, sprinkle baby powder on your skin. It soaks up sweat and excess sunscreen, making it easy to brush away every last grain.

How to clean your seashells

Many people pick up a seashell or two while on vacation at the beach. It makes a nice inexpensive momento of their vacation. The problems do not occur until they realize that if not cleaned properly, seashells can have a devastating effect. From glares of other travelers wondering why you have not showered, to airport authorities searching through your bags for the unknown odor emitting from them. Properly cleaned seashells, on the other hand, will show no such effects. Many times seashells actually look considerably nicer without any algae and barnacles covering them. The natural color of seashells are often quite different from what you find at the beach. A good cleaning is all that is needed to bring this out and destroy any odors the seashells might have.

A seashell that is found already dead with no animal tissue inside is actually a lot easier to clean then most people think. For cleaning live seashells, starfish, sanddollars, and more please visit www.seashells.org . They have a great section on cleaning and preserving just about anything from the sea.

Create a Keepsake

Everybody has them: buckets of seashells collected on vacation. This weekend, bring them out in a big way for a look that’s fresh and classic.

Splurge
Make a statement with a shell-studded accent. A custom mirror hung in an entrance or bedroom adds texture and color to any space. And if you don’t craft an item yourself, we’ll never tell.
Baton Rouge designer Becki Abercrombie shares the credit for this entry hall mirror with her whole family. “When they come to visit from California, we all work on crafts,” Becki explains. “Everyone in the house has a glue gun.”

To re-create this look, sketch your design and ask a carpenter to cut it out of plywood. Mount a store-bought mirror on top and fix it in place with picture molding, adhesive, or plastic mirror mounts. Use crushed seashells to fill in your design, and arrange prized beach finds to lend drama to the curves.

.or Save!
Create a still-life with your souvenirs. Fill jars, vases, and trays with beach finds, and showcase them in a sunny window. Inscribe your finds with a permanent marker as a reminder of your travels.

Skip the fringe. Trim window treatments with seashells, instead. For a streamlined look, hang them in a single row across the top. For romance, use satin ribbon to cascade pearly spirals down wispy sheers.

Illuminate favorite pieces in a glass votive or hurricane globe. Sea glass, shells, and sea stars anchored in sand set the scene—no hot glue required!

Like the decorator said to her sick friend - hope you re-cover soon!
